After scoring a huge box-office hit with his last movie, Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo, which grossed over P200-M when it was shown during the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) last December, Ryan Agoncillo admits he feels the pressure for his next big screen assignment.
This month, Ryan is set to start filming My Kuya’s Wedding for Regal Entertainment. Unlike his previous film project where he was paired with real-life sweetheart Judy Ann Santos, Ryan works with a new leading lady in My Kuya’s Wedding. Starstruck winner Jennylyn Mercado plays his love interest, while Maja Salvador plays his younger sister in the movie.
However, Ryan insists the bigger pressure on him is not on the box-office returns of the movie, but the technical aspect. At the helm of the project is young filmmaker Topel Lee, a UP and Mowelfund film scholar who is making his first mainstream romantic comedy. Topel made his directorial debut in the Yaya episode of Shake, Rattle and Roll, 8, also an MMFF entry last December produced by Regal. He promises to give a fresh and youthful approach to the well-loved genre of romantic comedy with My Kuya’s Wedding.
"It was a pleasant surprise for me when my movie with Juday made P200-M," Ryan asserts. "I want to make sure that My Kuya’s Wedding will be as good as Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo. I’m confident that Topel will give My Kuya’s Wedding the same gloss and quality that Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo had. Topel directed me in one of the station IDs of ABS-CBN and also for a music video. I’m comfortable working with him and it’s a pleasure to work with him in a full-length film."
Ryan has likewise expressed his excitement about his new film project because he is familiar with the screenwriter, Alan Tijamo, who wrote the award-winning drama, Blue Moon, also a Regal Entertainment production.
"When I found out it was Alan who wrote the script of My Kuya’s Wedding, I was immediately enthusiastic to work on the project," Ryan says. "The script is very heartwarming."
Although the role was originally offered to Dennis Trillo, Ryan did not mind that he is only the second choice to play the part of Maja Salvador’s older brother in the movie. "I was told that my role was originally intended for Dennis, but that is not an issue to me," Ryan maintains. "Dennis and I go a long way back. We used to have the same manager when we were still modeling before we both joined showbiz."
Ryan, who first made his mark as a TV host — first on GMA 7’s Unang Hirit and later on Studio 23’s Breakfast, Y Speak and on ABS-CBN’s Magandang Umaga Pilipinas and Talk TV — has also proven that he’s got the flair for acting. He was cast opposite Judy Ann in the fantasy-series, Kystala, where their romance blossomed. He also made his big screen debut in Joey Reye’s suspense-thriller, Kutob.
My Kuya’s Wedding is about two orphaned siblings, played by Ryan and Maja. Ryan goes abroad so he can earn enough for Maja’s college education. In Riyadh, he meets and falls in love with Jennylyn. When he finishes his employment contract, he returns to the Philippines with very surprising news for Maja. He is getting married to Jennylyn.
Maja is not pleased with the news and embarks on all sorts of schemes to stop her brother’s wedding. In the process, however, Maja finds herself falling for her future sister-in-law’s younger brother, Jason Abalos.
My Kuya’s Wedding is Ryan’s first film for Regal, as well as Maja’s Regal debut, too. Ryan is only too pleased to work with Maja for the first time on the big screen.
"This is Maja’s coming out film and I’m happy to support her," Ryan says. "I really want to work with her. She’s on the brink of being a really good actress and a really big star."
After My Kuya’s Wedding, which is set for a June playdate, Ryan will return to TV drama and teams up anew with Judy Ann in ABS-CBN’s forthcoming soap series, Isabella. He is also set to host anew the second season of Philippine Idol middle of this year on ABC 5.
He and Judy Ann also signed up for a movie for Regal. In the meantime, Ryan confirms he will make a special guest appearance in Judy Ann’s upcoming suspense-thriller, Ouija Board, with Jolina Magdangal for GMA Films. Topel Lee also directs the said project.
