StarStruck winners: Their transformation STARBYTES By Butch Francisco The Philippine Star 03/22/2007
(First of three parts) After the StarStruck grand finals on Sunday, March 25, at the Marikina Sports Park (telecast on GMA 7 is at 9:30 p.m.), life will never be the same for the StarStruck Survivor 6 — win or lose.
"We’ll see a lot of transformation among these young people," says Wilma Galvante, GMA 7 senior vice president for entertainment TV. Galvante gets to see the transformation of these StarStruck youngsters (from Batch 1 to the present) from the time they are whittled down to 40 (from a field of about a thousand aspirants) — till they are trimmed down to 14, then four (six this year) and all the way to the finals and beyond.
A week before the crowning of the new set of StarStruck winners, I asked Galvante to trace the transformation of some of the GMA 7 artists, whose showbiz careers all began when they tried their luck by joining StarStruck. She will also tell us what these young stars need to do to further improve their craft.
...
Jennylyn Mercado (Ultimate Female Survivor 2004) — Galvante immediately noticed Jennylyn in the beginning of the contest because of her singing voice. No, it wasn’t the young girl’s beauty that caught the attention of the GMA 7 top executive because as she put it: "The other girls were equally beautiful." And, yes, there was something different about Jennylyn that Galvante detected early on: "I sensed that she was troubled," remembers Galvante. (It was later revealed that Jennylyn was a battered child, whose case, in fact, was published in the papers a few years back).
"Of course, I wasn’t sure if she was going to be trouble later." Galvante adds. But was she? — I shoot back. "On occasions — yes." She sighs. on occasions? wag PO kasikau makikinig sa nkapaligid sau Ms. Wilma. siguro kapag hindi sumusunod sa pagkakaprogram ang robot ang iisipin na agad eh nagbibigay na ng problema. tska dapat pantay pantay ang tingin nyo sa mga alaga nyo. mahirap yang me favoritism
Galvante, however, points out that: "Lahat naman ‘yan may kalokahan. As they say — among artists, there is only a thin line between insanity and genius." Although most stars — the real talents anyway — are in the so-called "borderline," she firmly warns these young stars not to use this as an excuse to go wayward. eh kung ako ang artista nyo talagang maluluka ako. mabuti n lang d ako pumasok sa showbiz at baka sa inyo ako napadpad, patay, luka na nga
Galvante recalls further how, during the early phase of StarStruck Batch 1, Jennylyn would separate from the group, face the mirror with a blank stare and talk by herself — like she had a world of her own. may sariling mundo nga eh. bakit d sinabi na nasa isang sulok at pinipicturan nya sarili nya
At the moment, whatever troubled past Jennylyn had, she gets to use this to add or contribute to her seemingly dramatic appeal, according to Galvante. "I’m not saying that Jennylyn is already a very good dramatic actress, but she is getting there," she explains. mabuti naman at inamin din na magaling umarte si jen, bigyan nyo pa ng tamang role yan, yung magandang projects lalong lulutang ang kagalingan nyang umarte, hindi naman sa nagyayabang ako ksi totoo naman ang sinasabi ko,suwerte nyo nga at sa inyo napunta si jen. sana lang alagaan nyo yan
"However, Jennylyn has to move on, let go of that blank stare and be more aware of what’s going on around her — otherwise, all that talent will go to waste," sums up Galvante. wag nyo ksing robotin. mapupunta talaga sa waste ang talent kung gagawin nyo ngang bida hindi nyo naman ipapakita (ST n namn ang sinasabi ko)

JENNYLYN AT RYZA, HILAW ANG PAGBABATI
by Abu Tilamzik

Jolina, Jennylyn can’t do it: Juday wants Joyce to be Ryan’s leading lady
By NOEL FERRER
Issue # 1: MOVEOVER JOLINA & JENNYLYN, WILL JOYCE BE IT?
After the story–cum–press conference of Regal Films’ for its newest offering "My Kuya’s Wedding," it was announced that the lead stars of the film are Ryan Agoncillo and Maja Salvador with Jennylyn Mercado and Jason Abalos. It was announced that the role of Jennilyn was first offered to Jolina Magdangal who had to beg off from the assignment since she is set to campaign for boyfriend Bebong Munoz who is running for a congressional seat in Caloocan. So all is set for the first shooting day tomorrow. Or so we thought.
Unfortunately, when the filming schedules came, Jennylyn’s sked ran counter with that of Ryan’s and Maja’s. Unless Jennylyn’s manager, the ever gracious Tita Becky Aguila can do some adjustments, Regal Films may be compelled to choose another leading lady for Ryan Agoncillo.
As Ryan’s girlfriend, ENPRESS Best Actress Judy Ann Santos gave her blessings to friend Jolina Magdangal to be Ryan’s leading lady; but since she declined the role, Juday also takes fancy of Joyce Jimenez whom she thinks fits the role. Joyce recently came back from finishing a marketing course in Griffith University in Australia. She is also the new endorser of the Belo Medical Group’s Smart Lipo service.
Will Joyce be finally it?
i SPEAK:
This contested role in "My Kuya’s Wedding" is well-written by the Palanca award winning writer Allan Tijamo who also wrote "Blue Moon."
So whether it’s Jolina or Jennylyn or even Joyce Jimenez who will finally gets to play the role, the whole trouble of looking for the appropriate leading lady will be well worth it.
Other actresses short listed for the role are Iza Calzado, Iya Villania and even Bossa Nova Diva Sitti. How about you, who do you think fits the role? May the deserving actress get the role! Pronto

It's final!: Pauleen replaces Jennylyn in "My Kuya's Wedding"
Dinno Erece
Thursday, March 29, 2007
Contrary to an earlier report na hindi magba-back out si Jennylyn Mercado sa My Kuya's Wedding ng Regal Entertainment, kumpirmadong pinalitan na talaga siya ni Pauleen Luna.
Tuesday night hanggang early morning of Wednesday, nagpi-pictorial na ang pinakabagong pelikula ng Regal Entertainment, ang My Kuya's Wedding. It will star Ryan Agoncillo and Maja Salvador as the mag-kuya, Jason Abalos as Maja's suitor, and playing Ryan's fiancee will be Pauleen—not Jennylyn anymore.
During the press launch of the movie to be directed by Topel Lee from the script of Allan Tijamo, listed nang si Jennylyn ang gaganap na girlfriend ni Ryan, although non-appearance siya dahil may earlier commitment. During the said press con, itinuwid na agad ng producer na si Roselle Monteverde-Teo that the role will not be a secondary character to the characters of Ryan and Maja although wala sa title role. Pantay-pantay raw ang bigat ng tatlong roles.
Katunayan, una itong in-offer kay Jolina Magdangal. Kailangan lang tumanggi ni Jolens dahil susuportahan niya ang kaniyang boyfriend na si Bebong Muñoz who will run for the congressional seat in the second district of Caloocan City.
Nag-issue na rin ng statement si Jennylyn na walang problema sa kaniya if people will perceive that this is not a starring role or kung second choice lang siya at nasabi niya rin na hindi siya magba-back out.
Hindi pa alam ang dahilan why Jennylyn was replaced by Pauleen.

Jennylyn Mercado ready to face Alessandra de Rossi
Rey Pumaloy
Thursday, March 29, 2007

Jennylyn Mercado and Alessandra de Rossi end their riftDinno Erece Tuesday, April 3, 2007 Rating Nagkita at nagkaayos na sina Alessandra de Rossi at Jennylyn Mercado. Kahit Holy Tuesday, tuloy pa rin ang taping for the GMA-7 toprating show Super Twins starring Jennylyn, Nadine Samonte, and Dennis Trillo. Sa Parks and Wildlife ang location for the day at dito kukunan ang pagkakamatay ni Doña Besta played by Tetchie Agbayani. Contracted for two week si Alessandra to join the series playing Nickellina, ang half-sister ni Manuel played by Ian de Leon, na ama ng kambal na sina Sha-Sha and Tin-Tin na nagiging Super Twins. Last week ang first taping day ni Alex. From where she is resting, Jen got up to personally meet Alex nang dumating ang huli. Binati ni Jen si Alex and Alex returned the gesture. Nagbeso silang dalawa. It marked the end of their issue. Last year, the two were caught in a triangle over Jeremy Marquez, Alex's ex. Sa first taping nga ni Alex last week, complete ang GMA-7 TV crew to hopefully catch the event. Hindi ito natuloy. This time, ngayong nagkaayos na sila, wala namang camera to record it. Nakunan na rin ang first scene nila together after that meeting. Next week papasok si Alex as Nickellina sa Super Twins.

TOP CHOICES FOR LOCAL FILM AWARDS 2007 by William Reyes
For People's INSIDER
Mr. Augusto B. Villanueva, Editor-In-Chief
Mr. Franklin R. Cabaluna, Managing Editor +
Mr. JR Mercado, Acting Managing Editor
TOP CHOICES FOR LOCAL FILM AWARDS 2007
By: William R. Reyes
IN terms of output, the past year (2006) in our movie industry wasn't much different from the previous year (2005), when a lot of independently- produced digital features provided a much-needed shot in the arm, so to speak, to cause a revival of interest in local films.
The response by the industry people and the viewing public to local (digital) film competitions, such as the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival and Competition, the Cinemanila International Filmfest-Digital Lokal Competition, and the Cinema One Originals Filmfest, have continuously been positive and encouraging. But as ever, the standard viewing fare coming from the mainstream cinema, mostly commercial movies of various genres, remain a favorite by a bigger sector of the moviegoing public and provide greater revenues for the producers and theater owners.
Still, people from the industry continue to give recognitions, through different awards-giving organizations, to outstanding cinematic works from our local practitioners whether they are for revolutionizing the cinema industry, through the more daring and less costly indie/digital productions, or play safe by coming up with "formula" movies, which are, nonetheless, patronized for their improved technical quality and star value.
Already, the nominations (and winners) from some academe-based groups were out. And a sector or two from the local entertainment press have already chosen the nominees to this year's local movie awards.
We have, for the past two years, also come up with a list, to determine which films (including digital features, for that matter; no such distinction or division) and whose performances therein were really outstanding, through a random mini-survey of some industry people and movie buffs.
This year, we have a total of forty (40) respondents (including this writer) who voted on their Top Choices for local films' awards in the coming season. Categories include: Best Picture, Direction, Screenplay, and Performances (Lead/Supporting Actor and Actress).

Alessandra, Jennylyn bati na By: Dinno Erece DAILY INSIDER
ANOTHER all’s well that ends well between Alessandra de Rossi and Jennylyn Mercado.
Walang TV crew na nakakuha ng pagbabati nina Alex and Jennylyn sa set ng Super Twins last Tuesday. Everyone thought kasi na sa first taping ni Alex for the said primetime soap last week magtatagpo ang dalawa.
